What are Lionheads?
Lionheads are undergoing the presentation stage if the ARBA, as they are not a recognized breed in the USA. Lionheads have a high head mount, compact upright body type, short well-furred ears, and weigh usually between 2.5lbs to 3.75lbs. The main trait of a Lionhead is their mane circling their head, hence the name. The mane is wool, along with a skirt. The Lionhead has to be DOUBLE MANED to be shown. There are other types though, single, no mane, and when the rabbit contains the wool gene they get way too much mane. Double maned Lionheads will shed out within six months of age, of which their "saddle" area will be visible. Lionheads have great temperaments. I am often asked which is better for a pet? I say males, they tend to stay sweeter, and don't get aggressive. I do recommend you to get them neutered, it will help.
Taking care of a Lionhead
Lionheads have wool, and therefore have to be groomed. Juniors around the age of 6 months or younger needs to be groomed once a week, adults 6 months or older needs to be groomed once or twice a month. You will need a slicker brush, and a smaller pick like comb.
For cages you'll need proper space and shelter for them. For outside cages, make sure they have a place to get in out of the weather, and the cages are cleaned daily unless the feces fall through small wire. Make sure they have plenty of shade and aren't in direct sunlight. For inside cages, find the best indoor rabbit cage you can. It's a lot easier to clean your rabbits cage if it's litter box trained.
Feeding! You will need a pan for pellets and water, not to forget a hay rack. Rabbits need unlimited amount of hay, limited amount of pellets, and an unlimited amount of water supply!
